Hataman Touen Corporation

Hataman Touen was founded in 1926 by Mantaro Hataishi. It launched with a series of porcelain products featuring landscape scenes under its Man’yo and Hataman brands. Following the end of World War Two, the second generation Haruyuki Hataishi founded Hataman Pottery and sold porcelain decorated with landscape scenes at the Mitsukoshi department store in Ginza, Tokyo, thereby quickly establishing Hataman as a popular brand. Under its third generation of leadership the company has worked to establish its reputation as a producer of premium tableware embodying craftsmanship values of quality over quantity. The company focuses on passing down traditional skills, using these techniques in new ways, and encouraging the development of a new generation of craftsmen. Hataman has developed a unique product known as Sumisansui (a style of imagery imported from China to Japan) and worked to create a method for low-temperature firing.
